Bypass West Coast? Other ports prepare to grab shipping as Panama Canal widens

Washington state port leaders are watching with trepidation as East and Gulf coast ports accelerate their preparations.

Those ports are hoping to grab a larger chunk of business, hoping the wider canal will lower costs enough to entice many more ships bringing cargo from Asia to bypass the West Coast, traverse the canal, and unload at East and Gulf Coast ports.
