The potential weight of a Bainbridge port

Larry Croix has this opinion piece in the Kitsap Sun:

The attempt by some to establish a Port of Bainbridge Island will — if approved — be one more stone hanging from the necks of citizens of that island. It could be the straw that finally breaks the back of the city of Bainbridge Island.

I understand the motivation of the individuals supporting the formation of a port district, malady but I see it as one more of the "that’s a good idea" projects which in the end cause real problems. It establishes a new taxing authority that is born with debt and the power to levy higher taxes without further public approval.

Establishing a port district in no way reduces the taxes currently being collected by existing taxing authorities.
