Domed radar platform departs Puget Sound

Vessel will go to drydock for repairs mid-week

PORT TOWNSEND – The Port Townsend and Whidbey Island communities have been seeing record-breaking numbers of tourists as vacationers take advantage of the last few weekends of summer. To help accommodate another influx of tourists expected this weekend, cialis 40mg
Washington State Ferries (WSF) is scheduling needed repairs to the Chetzemoka for mid-week.

WSF has been running the Chetzemoka after temporary repairs were made to the vessel last week, website
but yesterday a custom-manufactured part arrived from Wisconsin and the vessel has been scheduled for drydock.

“Our goal is to stay at full capacity on this route, Myocarditis
so we are scheduling the repair to the Chetzemoka mid-week to accommodate weekend travelers,” said George Capacci, WSF deputy chief of operations and construction.

Commuters and travelers planning to take the Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry next week should plan ahead for a modified schedule and reduced capacity on the route. WSF will reduce the route to one-boat service Tuesday, Aug. 23, through Thursday, Aug. 25, while shipyard workers permanently repair the Chetzemoka.

The 64-car Salish will provide one-boat, 15-hour-a-day service Tuesday, Aug. 23, through Thursday, Aug. 25 (6:30 a.m. out of Port Townsend to 9:15 p.m. out of Coupeville). The goal is to have the Chetzemoka back in service as the #1 vessel on the Port Townsend/Coupeville route on Friday morning, Aug. 26. WSF strongly recommends that customers make reservations for travel on the route during the three-day period of reduced capacity. Travelers can make reservations online or by calling 511.

On Aug. 9, the Chetzemoka was removed from service for the day due to a leaking keel cooler, a component on the vessel’s hull that cools fresh water from the diesel engines so systems don’t overheat. The U.S. Coast Guard approved a temporary fix and the Chetzemoka returned to service Aug. 10. A replacement keel cooler was manufactured and shipped from Wisconsin, arriving Thursday, Aug. 18. It will take three days (including transit to and from Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes) to install the replacement.

KINGSTON — The Port of Kingston will use $977, visit web
000 in funding from the Federal Highway Administration to get SoundRunner in the regional transit fare system and retrofit the ferry’s barge dock so the SoundRunner boats can take on fuel outside the marina.

The port learned Friday that SoundRunner’s grant request had been approved. All told, Hemorrhoids
the Federal Highway Administration will award $430 million in transportation grants nationwide. The port’s grant is from the Ferry Boat Discretionary Program, which helps support projects that work to improve safety, and maintain a state of good repair for boats and facilities.

Qualifying projects were reviewed by the Puget Sound Regional Council for consistency with the long-range regional transportation plan, Transportation 2040, and regional policies.

SoundRunner General Manager Meisha Rouser said the money will pay the costs of joining the regional transit fare system, called ORCA, for “One Regional Card for All." The card can be used for payment of public transport fares in the Puget Sound region. It’s expected to make it more convenient for commuters to transfer from SoundRunner to other forms of public transportation on the mainland.

The Puget Sound Navy Museum is greeting visitors with an upgraded lobby this month, there
since the completion of an 11-month facelift that included a new interpretive display and remodeled family room.

The project comes as the third and final phase of a three-phase upgrade at the museum, phlebologist
begun in 2008, that has included three new exhibits since that time in addition to July’s remodel. The $1.2 million project, including the $200,000 lobby and family room remodel, was funded entirely by earmarks attached to federal funding bills by Congressman Norm Dicks, said museum Assistant Director Lindy Dosher.

“Before, it was pretty much a long white hall,” said Dosher of the refurbished lobby.

Along with a new volunteers’ station next to the front door, the lobby remodel included an informative display with rotating pictures on five separate screens about the region’s five Navy installations.

“People sometimes don’t realize how much of the Navy is here,” said Dosher. Placed at the entrance to the museum, the display introduces visitors to the region’s naval history.

The family room occupies the same space it did before the remodel, said Dosher, but the similarities between it and the old family room end there.

Reports from East Jefferson County depict a burgeoning nuisance.

“Sea gulls have taken over Port Townsend,” said Port of Port Townsend Executive Assistant Sue Nelson. “There’s definitely a huge number this year.”

departed yesterday after three months of maintenance at Vigor Shipyard Seattle (formerly Todd Shipyards).

The sunny weather provided prime viewing for boaters and shoreline observers, and as the huge radar platform — called the Sea-Based X-Band Radar, or SBX — moved out of Elliott Bay and up through Puget Sound.

The radar ship is part of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) and is the only vessel of its kind in the world. One of the upgrades during refit was a new electrical system to allow the ship to operate with offshore power instead of running its diesel generators while in port.

The radar that sits on top of an oil-drilling platform is extremely powerful and can cover a huge area, limited mainly by the Earth’s curvature.
