BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — The Coast Guard is furious that a person jumped off a Bainbridge ferry Wednesday afternoon in an apparent stunt filmed from shore.

The person leapt from the Wenatchee on its way from Seattle to Bainbridge Island. The incident happened at 2:36 p.m., sale 31 minutes into the 35-minute trip. The boat hadn’t entered Eagle Harbor, health but was near the island when the person hopped off the starboard side of the stern, according to Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Marta Coursey.

The person swam to an awaiting kayak and is believed to have paddled to shore, said Sgt. Steven Babb of the State Patrol. The State Patrol, which is leading the investigation, is trying to find the person, he said.

Chief Robert Lanier, a Coast Guard spokesperson, said he couldn’t find a federal law that applies to jumping from a ferry, and that it could be a state law.
