Port Orchard’s commitment to summer foot ferry stalls

PORT ORCHARD — A plan to provide Sunday summer foot ferry service between Bremerton and Port Orchard is dead in the water.

The Port of Bremerton, medications Port Orchard and Bremerton already contract with Kitsap Harbor Tours for service on holiday weekends. Port Orchard has floated the idea of covering all Sundays throughout the summer, and Bremerton appears to be on board. They’d split a total cost of around $19,000.

But Tuesday, port commissioners tabled a decision until their next meeting June 14. The commissioners, calling for more information from Kitsap Transit, soundly criticized the agency that until 2009 provided Kitsap County with Sunday bus and foot ferry service, now jettisoned for budget reasons.

"We’ve got an organization that’s not doing its job, and they want somebody else to do it," Commissioner Larry Stokes said.

Agreed Commissioner Bill Mahan, "Kitsap Transit has not done right by Port Orchard."
