Whatcom County officials have scheduled a test docking of the Whatcom Chief in Fairhaven for Tuesday, Jan. 26.

County Public Works Director Frank Abart said the county needs to make sure there is a backup plan for getting people and vehicles on and off the island. The lease for the mainland dock on Lummi Reservation expires Feb. 14 if no deal is reached.

He said the test run to Fairhaven should not be taken as evidence that negotiations with the tribe on a new lease are dead or dying.
