Tacoma port making major staff reduction

Steve Wilhelm at the Puget Sound Business Journal has the unfortunate story:

The Port of Tacoma is eliminating up to 20 percent of its staff through layoffs or attrition, according to people familiar with the situation.

The reductions could eliminate as many as 50 people from the port’s staff of 255.

Port Spokeswoman Tara Mattina declined to confirm the numbers, but said supervisors had met with employees Monday and told them if their positions were being eliminated or consolidated. She said the numbers would be made more clear on Tuesday.

“If we’re at 2002 cargo volumes now, and it takes us seven to 10 years to reach that 2006 peak, we need to make the entire organization smaller to be competitive,” Mattina said.
