Salish Sea name gaining momentum

by Tim Flanagan on March 14, 2009

I’m hopeful that this morning’s Seattle Times front-page story (Salish Sea: We’re already sailing on it by Warren Cornwall) will help the Salish Sea name gain the momentum it needs to come into general use.

I’m an advocate, as I’ve written before. Heck, I even bought the domain name Salish Sea Maritime.com, just in case!

The name Salish Sea would not replace any familiar name we’re already using. What it would do is allow us to discuss the inland sea consisting of the Georgia Basin, Puget Sound, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca without having to say or write “the inland sea consisting of the Georgia Basin, Puget Sound, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca”.

Even the shortest alternative in general usage, “Puget Sound Georgia Basin”, is unnecessarily awkward. It’s impossible to resist the truth that all this inland water is one single cohesive geographic entity. It’s one unified “place”, so it’s just plain weird that it doesn’t have a name!

I think this is a wonderful as well as sensible idea and I will wait eagerly to hear the good news.
I know about your quest after listening to the CBC program in Carp Ont this a.m.
