Gary Jobson interview at Three Sheets Northwest

by Tim Flanagan on March 22, 2009

Gary Jobson is a world class sailor, television commentator and author. He has won many championships in various one-design classes, the America’s Cup (with Ted Turner in 1977), the Fastnet Race, and many of the world’s ocean races.

Marty McOmber over at ThreeSheetsNorthwest interviewed Jobson in Seattle recently. McOmber took this photo of Jobson while at the Center for Wooden Boats on Lake Union. The interview is available here. A brief excerpt:

What is your experience sailing in the Northwest?
The first time I raced in Seattle was over 30 years ago. I came out with Ted Turner and we raced in the 6-meter Worlds. I’ve done some PHRF stuff here out of Shilshole. And I was out here for the Goodwill games some years ago. I also came out as a coach with a college team and we sailed at UW.

What was your impression?
The cool thing about Seattle is you have so many different waters. You got the lake here (Lake Union); you got the Strait of Juan de Fuca; you can get up to the San Juans or Canada. And there are a lot of different elements. You are dealing with tides here. And the winds can be all over the map. So I think that sailors from Seattle get a good variety of conditions.
