SEATTLE — Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the Washington State Maritime Cooperative (WSMC) are responding to a reported hydraulic fluid spill in Puget Sound around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.
The Hyundai Republic reportedly lost hydraulic fluid while getting underway from Blair Waterway in Tacoma, and a small sheen was reported at the ship at Elliot Bay in Seattle.
Investigators are on scene and determining the size of the spill and if cleanup efforts are possible. The initial report is that approximately 132 gallons of hydraulic fluid was accidentally released as the vessel was just getting underway from its mooring at the Washington United terminal in Tacoma.
Coast Guard, Ecology and WSMC responders are in Tacoma, and with the docked vessel in Seattle.
Ecology is working to get a helicopter to fly over the potential spill area to better gauge the size of the spill. There are no reports of injuries at this time.
