<description>Shortly after arriving in Tacoma to work at the Washington State Historical Society I encountered (cannot remember how since it was 30 years ago) folks from Northwest Seaport looking for volunteers to &quot;preserve&quot; this grand old ship. I walked every inch of it inside and out and decided to work on one of the fore decks (hope I got that right). I scraped and painted and was incredible proud of the work that I had done to preserve the vessel. It saddens me that all of the efforts of people trying their best could not assure its survival.
